Edward Calvin Crow, son of Calvin Austin and Elizabeth Thaxton Crow, was born on 18 June 1866, in Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama. He studied law at the University of Alabama and graduated with his law degree in 1888 and took a post doctorate law course at the University of Virginia in 1889.
